UPCOMING TOURNAMENTS AADGC MEMBERS WIN THE MILWAUKEE ICE BOWL If you had told AADGC members Mike Schwieger and Terry Miller that it was below zero at the Milwaukee Ice Bowl, they would have laughed at you. They would have said it felt more like 85 degrees and continually getting warmer. Was there a heat wave coming through or was it just their game that was on fire? After a disappointing playoff loss from last year, Mike and Terry came back to “The Real Ice Bowl 16” with something to prove. Their –19 under par from the long tees was a fun round that was bogey free and filled with plenty of great shots. They both had their stretch of holes in which one or the other was ‘on’ and whenever Terry would miss a putt, Mike would be there to clean it up. The good thing was they rarely needed to putt from outside 15 feet. Although the results cannot be official due to the fact that it was doubles, it looks as if their round would have rated at least as a 1060 in the PDGA ratings system. Overall, they both felt they contributed evenly to what later was declared an Ice Bowl record score for the 24-hole layout. With a 5-stroke lead going into the second round, there was already some anticipation of taking home the title. The same title that slipped through their hands as Terry missed a short putt on the first playoff hole last year.. Remembering that they had to stay calm and still ‘play their game’ in alternate shot, they came out on fire to start the second round. Deucing 4 of the first 6 holes quickly increased their lead to 9 and they knew they were headed in the right direction. Unfortunately, they went through a stretch of holes picking up a few bogeys and eventually found themselves barely under par. Terry and Mike managed to deuce 3 of the last 5 holes, which was good enough for a 4 under par and a 2 stroke Ice Bowl victory. Although Terry had to leave immediately to attend his brother’s wedding reception, Mike was there to accept plenty of congratulatory pats on the back. Yes, you read that correctly, Terry skipped his stepbrother’s wedding so that he could play in the Ice Bowl. (These guys are definitely dedicated to the game) Besides being great friends and traveling buddies, these two golfers now share the elusive title of Ice Bowl Champions. Congratulations. Complete Miwaukee Ice Bowl Results PLAYING TIP OF THE MONTH Putting by Ken Climo 11 time World Champion As much as I enjoy throwing drives under the pin, putting is a big part of my success. I contribute 25% on my total game to putting. When I first started playing, I practiced 100 putts at the course every day before I even thought about playing. And there was a time when I was up to a couple hundred putts a day. There is no substitution for this type of repetition for muscle memory. More tips from Ken Climo on putting AADGC DOES WELL AT THE CRACKED PLASTIC CLASSIC AADGC members, Terry Miller and Chris Olinger represented well this past weekend at the wintery B-Tier, Cracked Plastic Classic. The tournament was held in Kalamazoo, Michigan which is about a 6 hour drive from Appleton. Terry was tied for the lead after the first round but Pit Vital of Indiana played a solid second round to secure the victory. Chris moved from being tied for fourth place to move solely into his third place finish. Both players seem to have this course dialed in as Terry has one 3 different sanctioned events there and Chris has now finished in 2nd and 3rd place in his two visits. FIRST GREEN BAY ICE BOWL As a seasonal disc golfer, I decided to venture out into the cold one time and compete in the first Green Bay Ice Bowl. The snow drifts were over2 feet high and cold, but it was a blast. The Tournament Headquarters was stationed at the Townline Sports Bar down the street from Pinecrest Disc Golf Course. 10 AADGC members competed out of 24 competitors. 1st place open were Terry Miller, Team Discraft, and Mike Schwieger, Team Flying Fortress. AADGC member, John Dorn and Kevin Rennock won the masters. The story even made the Green Bay Paper. The event was hosted by John Dorn and sponsored in part by Throwing Art, AADGC, Flying Fortress, and Townline Sports Bar. John Dorn, TD writes: MUCHO thanks to Tom Jenkins for all his hard work on the Pinecrest course. Thanks to Tom, Scooter, Kevin, Simon & Jeremy, Ken Kreie and well, just about everyone who showed up helped in some way. Steve Nichols brought a big BOX of good for Paul's Pantry! THANKS! The site is very user friendly and allows you to research the players you choose. AND IT"S FREE. Get started Discussion MEET AND GREET AADGC MEMBER TOM JENKINS When and How did you get started in Disc Golf? It all started by playing catch with a Frisbee in high school. I loved playing catch and making trick throws and catches. Once I went off to college at UW Stout, I continued this past time as often as possible. Some other enthusiasts saw me playing and asked me to come and join them when they played with some other buddies on a different part of campus. It eventually graduated into attending my first competition at the WI state overalls in 1978, where I competed in all events including golf, at Vollrath park in Sheboygan. What have you learned in your experience in the sport? I think the biggest thing I have learned from competition is how to focus and channel my energy . You cannot change what just happened. Take a deep breath and plan for the next shot. How has the game changed over the years? Disc technology. I started playing with a masters Frisbee. After that the disc of choice for golf was the world class 119 gram disc or the world class 141 gram disc. After that the midnight flyers became prevalent. Then the beveled edge disc came out, Innova Eagle, and technology just took off after that. Throwing 300 feet used to be a major accomplishment. Now if you can't throw that far you can't compete. Which players do you respect? It would be easy to say I respect players that can throw far and put up really good scores. Of course I respect those players and others that try and take this game farther. But the players I respect the most are those that keep their composure when things don't go their way. If they miss a big putt or shank a drive, they don't kick their bag or rant and rave. They concentrate on the next shot and forget about the last one. To improve we all need to learn from our mistakes and have a short memory. Who has helped you most with your game? Without a doubt that would be John Terlap. When he lived in the valley we practiced together, traveled together, threw in fields, and talked about the mental approach to disc golf competition. He helped me go from an advanced player to a consistent professional. He helped me with the mechanics of throwing but the biggest thing for me to take the next step was the mental game. It is a crucial part of being competitive in this sport and being successful. What are the strengths in your game? I would say that my putting and driving give me an advantage in my division, pro masters. And again my mental game helps me tremendously. We all have bad shots or holes but being able to forget those mistakes, helps me finish in the money at most of the events I enter. What are your favorite courses? That is a hard question to answer. I have played over 80 courses in 18 states and in Europe. It is difficult to choose between them because they all have their own character. I still get butterflies in my stomach when I drive into the parking lot of a course I am about to play for the first time. But if I had to choose I would say Sandy Point because of the atmosphere around the course and the property. The course is very challenging and makes you throw straight. I have also had a lot of success in tournaments there. I would say 2 other courses take a close second, Heistand and Elver in Madison. What's in your bag? Putter: Omega 1.2 175 gr My favorite putter and not available anymore. I am always looking to buy more. Omega 1.2 153 gr long putts and tough out shots from the swag Omega 1.2 P&A Mid range: 4-6 rocs in various stages of stability, depending on the course Drivers: CE Viking 166 gr CE Barry Beast 169 gr CE Valkyrie 1st run 169 gr my main driver CE Valkyrie 162 gr CE Eagle 1st run 164 gr CE Firebird FL 1st run 171 gr great headwind driver CE Firebird F 196 gr very stable Proto valkyrie 171 gr beat up and a great straight flyer SE Leopard 175 gr great slow turn over disc Epic (2) I have been able to get these things to fly 500 ft. on occasion with an overhand thumber. I am still working on understanding them and what they will do in certain situations. Banshee 147 gr overhand thumber disc. The lighter weight puts less pressure on my shoulder. What's your favorite tournament ? My favorite tourney has always been the Midwest team tourney at Sandy Point. Going up there and playing with all of those top notch touring players is a real honor and just being there just to play golf in the Northwood's is very cool. What was your proudest moment playing? (ie. Biggest Win) Without a doubt my proudest moment competing was my second place finish at '98 am worlds held here in the Fox Valley. I worked on getting that tourney here for over 2 years and being able to play in it and almost be the "world champ" was very special. I lost by 2 strokes but had a great week regardless. I turned pro at the next tournament I played in after that and never looked back. What do you do outside of disc golf? I am married, 20+ years so far and counting, with 3 teenage children. My oldest will be going to college next year. I recently retired from playing fast pitch softball after 20 years. I was a catcher. That is where I developed a strong overhand throw. I also retired from ice hockey after playing 25 years. I got 2 concussions within a 2 week period and the doctors told me to quit. I also coach youth baseball. I am an engineer by profession. What do you see happening in the Appleton Area in the Future? Disc golf in the Fox Valley is very strong thanks in part to the many people that helped get courses in the ground, run leagues, organize clubs, hold clinics, and just generally promote this great life time sport. The Telulah course is in trouble because of the heavy use and lack of maintenance in its short life. But golf will continue because of all the players and supporters that want it to stay. The Park and Rec. commission has promised that disc golf will stay at Telulah but it may be cut to a 9 hole course. What are your goals for disc golf? - both personal and for the sport. My personal goal is to be the state champion of the Wisconsin tour. I have taken 2 consecutive 3rd places. I also hope to make the first cut at my first pro worlds this coming August. My goal for the sport has already been realized, to a certain degree. I have always strived to get more quality course in the ground by meeting with parks dept. people and designing courses. I usually have 1 or 2 course projects in the works at all times. I would love to hold an am worlds here again in the Fox Valley. What's one thing you would change about the sport if you could? I wish disc golf was more "main stream". Meaning it was more accepted by the public. It is becoming more understood and acknowledged by most but we still have a long way to go. I would love to see competitions between schools like football, baseball, etc. I sincerely believe I will see this someday. What's your favorite thing about the sport of disc golf? There are many things about disc golf that I enjoy; a walk in the park, the feeling of throwing that disc exactly where I wanted it to go, the friendly competition, the camaraderie of friends while playing, and meeting new people at a course. But the best part of disc golf for me is seeing a young kids riding his or her bike to a course with their one disc to enjoy this sport. That always gives me a warm feeling inside!
