PLAYING TIP OF THE MONTH
by Steve Pisaro

I believe that if you practice putting 100 times before a tournament, it will take at least 2 strokes off your score.  Your body has a memory.  It knows how much strength to put into the putt and the direction as well.  We need to remind our body how to putt.

RULE OF THE MONTH

Question:  How far can you stand behind your mini marker.

Answer:  Rule 803.03 When the disc is released, a player must:
Have at least one supporting point that is in contact with the playing surface on the line of play and within 30 centimeters directly behind the marker disc (except as specified in 803.03 E)  803.03 E States that if a large solid obstacle prevents a player from taking a legal stance within 30 centimeters directly behind the marker disc, the player shall take his or her stance immediately behind that obstacle on the line of play. The player must comply with all the provisions of 803.03 A other than being within 30 centimeters directly behind the marker disc.

This and other rules can be found at the PDGA Site http://www.pdga.com/rules/index.php

TELULAH PINS ARE IN!

Need I say more?  Plamann should be in soon.

WEEKLY COMPETITIONS STARTED
I don't call the weekly competitions leagues, because leagues usually means you have to show up every week.  I promote them as weekly competitions, because that is what they are, so anyone can join in at any time - once or all the time.  Telulah kicked off the season last night at O'hauser with 24 people (19 of which were AADGC members).  Telulah Pins are now in so it will be played at Telulah from now on.  Here is a rundown on the weekly competitions and the start dates.

Wednesday (Telulah Tourneys) is a singles competition that will give you the experience of individual competition.  Most PDGA events are singles competitions.  Wednesdays are run the same way as major tournaments, except on a smaller scale.  There are 3 divisions: Pro, Advanced, and Am(beginners).  It also gives you a chance to play with some great players but compete against players at the same level.  These are also meant to be a lot of fun. Wednesday nights are the main emphasis for the club.  STARTED

Thursday (Plamann Pro/Am Doubles)  is also excellent for the new players. At these weekly competitions, you will be able be paired up with a pro and take the best shot from the two of you. Starts first week in May (if pins are in)

Mondays (O'Hauser) is mainly for the advanced players.  It is singles and one division Starts May 10

Tuesdays (Grignon Park, Kaukauna) This is one division but handicapped.  If you shoot worse than -5 (pro par), you will have a handicap.  Starts the last Tuesday in April

All competitions start at 5:45 for registration and start play at 6:00pm.  If you show up at 6:00, you're late.

OSHKOSH GETS A NEW COURSE
Many people helped Oshkosh put in a new course at the Red Arrow Park.  Tom Jenkins was the designer.  The pins might be in now.  If not - probably by the end of next week.  It is located behind the K-mart.  A new course is the best thing a community can do to promote the sport.  Congratulations to all involved!

MEET AND GREET AADGC PRESIDENT KEN KREIE

When and How did you get started in Disc Golf?

In 1998, When I started a business, I needed to cut down on expenses, so I looked for a roomate.  I moved in with Bryan Wardall, and he had all kinds of discs in the house.  He told me about courses that were set up for the sport.  So I played my first round at Telulah and was hooked.  Then Steve Pisaro invited me to a Saturday Morning Winter League that Scott Rholoff was heading, and I was paired up with John Terlap.  We won.  I was using borrowed discs until my first tournament - the Winter League Finale.  I bought a Roc and got an ace in the tournament and won $67.  If that won't get you addicted, I don't know what will.

What have you learned in your experience in the sport?

I'm about to sound like an after school special but - I learned to take more responsibility for my actions on and off the course.  In Disc Golf, I can't blame anyone for the poor shot except me.  But the good news is that I don't have to share credit for my good shots either.  Team sports teach team work, but Disc Golf teaches kids that it is up to you if you want to succeed.

How has the game changed over the years?

Since I started playing, there have been a lot more new courses, better tournaments and more awareness.  I'm tired of explaining what disc golf is, but I will still do it for anyone that asks.  I'd rather talk about the tournaments, organizations, etc.  The player and course ratings are great.

Which players do you respect?

I respect anyone that helps the sport in anyway.  Even if they just play the tournaments, because that is a big part:

    - The people that volunteer just for the love of the game like - Tom Jenkins, Scott Rohloff, Terry Miller, and John Dorn.

    -  The people that help build the sport by making it profitable, like Dave Van De Loo at the Flying Fortress.(Even though he gives so much to the sport in the valley, I wonder if there is profit).

    - The players that congratulate others when they make a good shot -  even though you're competing against them like Mike Schwieger.

    - The people that run the weekly tournaments which takes a lot of time and effort like Jeremy Coenen, Chris Locke and Matt Schmidt.

The people that I don't respect are the ones that don't volunteer for anything AND complain about the ones that do.  It's OK if you don't volunteer, but at least support the people that do.

Who has helped you most with your game?

Probably Chris Olinger.  I play with him the most and he pushes me, because, overall, he is a slightly better player than me.  I can't beleive I just admitted that.  I always have something to shoot for.  I recommend playing with people that are better than you.  You tend to play to the level of the people you hang around.  When I moved up to Pro, prematurely, my game had dramatically improved.

What are the strengths in your game?

My putts within 1 foot of the basket.  Just kidding,  Actually I am very confident with my upshots.  I know when to go for it, and I know when to lay up.  It has saved me a lot of strokes in tournments.

What are your  favorite courses?

I like Telulah in the Fox Valley.  Sandy Point is a beautiful course.  Outside of the state, I would have to say Dallas, TX.  Most of the courses have a winding river that goes through the course.  I love any holes where there is a water hazard for some reason.

What's in your bag?

I putt with the aviar, upshot with a $5.00 Wal Mart Roc, and drive with the XL most of the time.  I try to limit my discs.  I am very hesitant to try anything new.  I want to know my few discs very well instead of knowing many discs a little.

What's your favorite tournament?

The Worlds are always fun.  A week of Disc Golf with the best in the world.  How can you top that?   I like tournaments that have extra stuff other than the tournament.  Sandy Point has the cottages, Standing Rocs has the distance contest and the party and fly mart.  Fox Valley Open has the Jumbo Putt contest.  Those are a lot of fun.

What was your proudest moment playing?  (ie. Biggest Win)

When I was a new pro and played the Pickle Open.  I made it to the lead card with current world champ, Barry Schultz.  I had a great round and actually beat him in that round and took the #1 bag tag back to Appleton.  It was a great feeling.

What do you do outside of disc golf?

I am the Corporate Trainer at Tel Mark Sales in Appleton.  I do training seminars every day on Sales, Management, Computers, and more.  It's a great place to work and i meet a lot of people.  I also keep up the aadgc website and operations.  I'm married and have a 2 year old son (PDGA# 19805) that keeps me pretty busy.

What do you see happening in the Appleton Area in the Future?

I see Appleton as being the premier place for disc golf in Wisconsin.  I hope we will have the greatest concentration of courses, greatest weekly competions, and the greatest club.  We have a ton of rec players in this area, so I want to promote the idea of organized events to those players.  The future looks bright and I will do more than my part to help build it.

What are your goals for disc golf? - both personal and for the sport.

I hope to finish in the top 50 this year in the world championships.  For the sport, I have a never ending mission to help get disc golf the exposure it needs to grow - to get it on TV.

What's one thing you would change about the sport if you could?

I would like to see clubhouses on or near the courses like in ball golf.

What's your favorite thing about the sport of disc golf?

Driving a disc 400 feet and landing it inches away from the pin.  There is nothing like that feeling.  But the best part is when your friends are there to see it.  I don't really enjoy discing alone.

BUTTERMILK IN FOND DU LAC CLOSES

Funeral services held soon.  The following message was posted on the FDL Disc Golf Website:
Yes, it's true. As we've stressed since the courses inception, its fate lay in the hands of the surrounding neighbors and park guests. It was important that all golfers showed respect and courteousness. Unfortunately, not everyone heeded this advice and the city has ordered the course's removal. Thanks to everyone who helped make Buttermilk possible--those who helped with it's construction, and those who played the course mannerly and with class. We're sorry to see it go so soon...
